File Report OP Instruction
Lund Consulting Services frequently uses a software tool called File Report to collect and prepare data for a Second Opinion service. File Report provides Lund's consultants with specific system performance information about a system's most frequently accessed files.
In order for us to access the system log files, Lund Consulting Services will need SM capabilities. We understand that some clients prefer not to give out SM capabilities. If this is the case we ask that you, the Client, complete the File Report for our consultants' use in preparing your Second Opinion. Please send the File Report to us as soon as possible. If, for some reason, you are unable to provide Lund Consulting Services with a complete File Report in a timely manner, the system performance data regarding most frequently accessed files will be omitted from your Second Opinion.
To log File Report data, do the following:
- Get system manager capabilities.
- At the MPE prompt, do a SWITCHLOG. Make a note of the logfile number.
- Run the logging utility, SYSLOG.UTIL.LPS. For example, type: RUN SYSLOG.UTIL.LPS
- At the Syslog: prompt type SHOW. This will give you a list of the logging options available.
- Set the following parameters:
:SET FILE_CLOSE or :SET 105
:SET CM_FILE_CLOSE or :SET 160
- Type EXIT to get back to the MPE prompt.
- Allow the system to log for several days to a week.
- The system log files will increase in size for the duration these items are on.
To stop logging:
- Run the logging utility again. For example, type: RUN SYSLOG.UTIL.LPS
- Reset the following parameters to stop logging these items in the system log files.
:RESET FILE_CLOSE or :RESET 105
:RESET CM_FILE_CLOSE or :RESET 160
- Type EXIT to get back to the MPE prompt.
To create a File Report of the logged data, do the following:
- Run the File Report program, FILERPT.UTIL.LPS for example, type: RUN FILERPT.UTIL.LPS;PARM=1000. (The PARM value is very important)
- At the prompt, "Enter command (CR=CREATE:)" Press ENTER.
- At the prompt, "Exclusions set:" Type ZERO if it stops and wants an answer.
- At the prompt, "Are the log files in PUB.SYS? " Type the letter Y.
- At the prompt, "Want a LISTF of the log files? " Type the letter Y.
- The log file names will be displayed in numerical order without consideration of dates. For example:
FILENAME
LOG1259 LOG1260 LOG1261 LOG1263 LOG1264 LOG1264
LOG1265 LOG1266 LOG1267 LOG1268 LOG1269 LOG1270
- Enter the first log file number. For example, 1259.
(From the SWITCHLOG command above.)
- Enter the last log file number. For example, 1270.
- At the prompt, "Enter name of new summary file (CR = SUMLOG):"
Press the ENTER key. The program will now create a new SUMMARY LOGFILE.
- At the prompt, "Enter command (CR = LIST): ", Press ENTER.
- At the prompt, "Enter name of summary file (CR = SUMLOG):" Press ENTER.
- At the prompt, "Enter sort type [1..9] (CR=1):" Press ENTER.
STOP!!!
On the Reflections window, click on FILE, then go down and click LOGGING.
Select LOGGING ON
Deselect PRINTER
Select DISK
In the box to the right of this option you will be putting in the path and name of a text file. This file will capture all of the information that will scroll across the screen from the SUMLOG output file on the host. You can call this file whatever you want. Example: C:\FILERPT.TXT
Click OK - This will close the dialog box and take you back to the Reflections host window
- At the prompt, "Enter cutoff percentage, or # followed by number of files to list
(CR = 100%): " Press ENTER.
The screen will now scroll and all information will be captured in
the .TXT file on the PC.
- At the prompt, "Enter command (CR = LIST ): "
Press //. This will end the program and take you back to the MPE prompt.
- On the Reflections window, click on FILE, then go down and click LOGGING.
Deselect LOGGING ON
Click OK - This will close the text file on the PC.
- Open the .TXT file in Notepad or your favorite text editor or word processing program.
- The file will be sorted by the number of records processed. The first host file listed will be the most heavily accessed file on your host system followed by the second and third etc.
- The top 10 -15% of these files are the ones you want to concentrate on when using the actual DEFRAG & FRAGMENT commands in DEFRAG/X.
